The wait is finally over. Toyota has officially pulled the covers off its first mass-market electric SUV for India, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella. After months of speculation and “Urban SUV concept” teasers, the production-spec model is here, and it looks ready to shake up the segment.
If you have been holding off on booking the Hyundai Creta EV or the Tata Curvv EV, you might want to read this first. Bookings are officially open, and the launch is just around the corner.
What is the Toyota Ebella?
In simple terms, the Toyota Ebella Electric is Toyota’s version of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara. Built on the dedicated Heartect-e skateboard platform, it shares its DNA with the Maruti but wears a distinct Toyota suit.

Unlike the badge-engineering jobs of the past (looking at you, Glanza), the Ebella gets a unique identity. The front features a sharp “hammerhead” design language, sleek pixel-style LED DRLs, and a more aggressive bumper that separates it from its Suzuki cousin.
Toyota Ebella: Battery, Range & Performance

Toyota knows that “range anxiety” is the biggest hurdle for Indian buyers. To tackle this, the Ebella is being offered with two battery pack options:
- 49 kWh Battery: Paired with a 144 bhp motor. Ideal for city commutes with a claimed range of approx. 400+ km.
- 61 kWh Battery: The enthusiast’s choice. Paired with a stronger 174 bhp motor and a massive claimed range of 543 km (ARAI).
Note: As of now, the India-spec model is confirmed with a Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) setup. An AWD version might follow later.
Interior & Features: Catching Up to 2026

Step inside, and the cabin feels lightyears ahead of the Hyryder. Toyota has finally embraced the tech-heavy trend:
- Dual-Screen Setup: A 10.25-inch digital driver display merged with a 10.1-inch infotainment screen.
- Comfort Tech: Ventilated front seats, a fixed panoramic glass roof, and a premium JBL sound system.
- Safety First: It comes loaded with Level 2 ADAS, a 360-degree camera, and 7 airbags as standard.

The “Battery as a Service” Twist?

Rumors suggest Toyota might introduce a Battery as a Service (BaaS) rental scheme, similar to the MG Windsor EV. This could significantly drop the upfront sticker price, making the Toyota Ebella Electric accessible to a wider audience. We are waiting for official pricing confirmation on this.
Price & Rivals

We expect the Toyota Ebella price to start around ₹18 Lakh and go up to ₹24 Lakh for the top-spec long-range variant.
It is entering a war zone, directly rivaling:
- Hyundai Creta Electric
- Maruti e-Vitara
- Tata Curvv EV
- Mahindra BE 6
Our Honest Take

The Toyota Ebella Electric plays it safe but smart. It doesn’t have the radical futuristic curves of the Mahindra BE 6 or the raw speed of the BYD Atto 3, but it offers what Indian families want most: Toyota reliability in an electric package.
